Sulfur: An Effective Acne Treatment?

By Andrew Logan

I was out on a shopping spree the other day at the local mall and I ran across an excellent product for the treatment of acne that I would like to share with you. It was a cheap store brand product that I actually bought, but that is not what is important; the active ingredient is sulfur which is the subject of this article.

Not to worry though, because in the form of a facial scrub or a cleanser it does not smell at all, actually it smells quite pleasant. But, moving on from smells let's look at what it can do for you and your worst enemy; acne.

Most acne treatments take two or three different products to remove dead skin, unclog your facial pores, and kill off bacteria but sulfur does all three of these things in one step.

The first thing you will want to do is use a facial scrub that contains sulfur as the active ingredient. The purpose of a scrub is to remove the outer layer of dead skin, which exposes the skins pores and readies them for the next step.

In the same step sulfur will be doing another equally important job; killing acne causing bacteria. This happens because sulfur contains a chemical called sulfacetamide, which has certain properties that make it a great antibacterial agent.

Now that your outer layer of dead skin cells have been removed, the built up dirt and oil in your pores have been flushed out, and the bacteria have been killed you will want to keep it that way. This brings us to another product.

The best thing to use for this is non-soap face soap. I know that this sounds weird, but that is precisely what it is. This product is a lot milder then the sulfur facial cleanser, so it can be used on a daily basis without causing irritation.

It is important to note that some people are allergic to the various chemicals that are included in facial cleansers. For this reason you should consult your dermatologist before you begin any treatment.
