Acne Scar Removal - Your Choices Explained

By Jayne N Nightingale

Acne scars can have a negative impact on your self image. However, you dont have to hide your face if you have acne scars. You now have options when it comes to acne scar removal. But the method of scar removal you choose depends on the type of scars you have and how much money you have to spend on scar removal.

A chemical peel is one method used to remove acne scars. A strong chemical will be applied to your skin using a cotton tipped applicator. The depth of your scars will determine the strength of the chemical used. During a chemical peel, you can experience a stinging sensation. If your doctor wants to do a deep peel, he may use an anesthetic to help with the pain. Remember it can take several weeks to heal from a deep chemical peel.

If you have mild scarring your doctor may recommend microdermabrasion. This method of acne scar removal consists of small particles being passed through a vacuum tube to scrape away the top layer of scarred skin. This will remove the scar and stimulate new tissue growth. Microdermabrasion usually requires several treatments to get the best results.

If you have deep pitting from acne then your doctor may recommend a more drastic scar removal treatment. In this method, the acne scar is actually removed by a surgical instrument and the wound is then stitched up. Instead of a large scar you are left with a small surgical scar that can later be smoothed out. This method can be painful, and it will take several weeks for the wounds to heal.

Before you try any of these methods of acne scar removal you may want to give a few acne scar creams a try. There are a few on the market these days that claim they can reduce the appearance of any acne scars. These creams will be less expensive and easier to manage than any of the above treatments.
