Causes And Treatment Of Acne Scars

By Edward Spencer

Acne is a perennial problem particularly for women, with its sudden appearance and the permanent scars that it leaves behind. Howsoever you abhor it, acne is a part of most teenagers' lives and a lot of effort must be put behind battling these ugly little things and preventing their recurrence.

When the sebum discharged by skin glands reacts with bacteria, it results in an infection, which is known as acne. As the condition heals, collagen, which is a protein, is created in the inner surface of the skin. When the collagen is in excess, there is a protrusion and when its generation is below normal then it leads to tiny craters on the skin. Acne scars develop in both these situations. Teenagers usually suffer more than others because the amount of hormones increase rapidly during the period of puberty causing increased secretion of sebum.

Some of the general causes of an acne infection are usage of cosmetic products that are not suitable for the skin type, intake of contraceptive pills and drugs, and other genetic factors. Some of the lifestyle factors like tension, improper diet, and residing in a polluted area can also lead to acne. However, contrary to common perception, there is no scientific connection between spicy or junk food and acne.

Despite availability of numerous herbal skin-care products and creams for the treatment of acne available in the shops, it is better to consult a doctor if the infection increases or appears repeatedly. Avoiding squeezing the lesion or jabbing it with any sharp object is a must to avoid aggravation of acne.

Many people have now turned to medical procedures for making acne scars disappear and to get a clear skin again. Laser based procedures and surgery are also being done increasingly for removing acne scars, in addition to many new treatments that have been discovered by medical science. You must take advice from a well known skin doctor who would be able to identify your skin type and recommend a proper remedy accordingly.
